ABILENE, TX – The State of Texas has filed a motion revoke the probation, or community supervision, of former Abilene attorney Burt Burnett.
The State of Texas also alleges Burnett “failed to submit to a hair test as directed on or about October 7, 2020.”
Last year Burnett was sentenced to 10 years of deferred adjudication after pleading guilty for stealing settlement money from his clients.
In October of 2019 Burnett pleaded guilty to felony charges. Prosecutors said he stole more than $500,000 in settlement money.
Nancy Edwards was injured in 2012 after her c ar was rear ended by an 18 wheeler. She says she only received $90,000 instead of the $507,000 she was supposed to get in the settlement.
“It makes me sick and I can’t hardly stand it. He stole our money,” said Edwards.
In 2017, the Texas Bar Association suspended Burnett’s law license. He later relinquished it instead of possibly being disbarred.
Burnett’s hearing on the Motion to Revoke Community Supervision continues Friday morning at the Taylor County Courthouse. If he is found in violation he could serve time in jail.
