The Abilene City Council voted unanimously to approve bringing Great Lakes Cheese to the City of Abilene on Friday.

“This is a game changer,” Mayor Williams said.

The manufacturer will create over 500 new jobs, with an average salary of $60,000 per year, and will generate roughly $1.3 billion over the next ten years for the City of Abilene according to the DCOA.

The $184.5 million project will be located at Access Business Park near the intersection of Highway 36 and FM 18.

“Great Lakes Cheese is one of the largest packaged cheese companies in America and it’s a family own business. It is exactly the Texas style of doing business,” Gov. Abbott said.

“This project was made possible due to the support of Governor Greg Abbott who, in addition to Representative Lambert and Senator Buckingham, will be sharing why this is a huge win for the state of Texas. This incredible opportunity is positioned to provide enormous benefits to the citizens of Abilene through jobs and capital investment and will be the largest project recruited by the DCOA in its 30-year history,” the DCOA said in a press release on Friday.

Speaking at 10:30 a.m. on Friday:

  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott
  • Texas State Senator Dawn Buckingham
  • Texas State Representative Stan Lambert
  • The Honorable Mayor Anthony Williams
  • Project Legacy Company Executive
  • DCOA Board Chair, Jack Rich
