Numbers of COVID-19 cases in county slowing

DALLAS, TX – The numbers of COVID-19 cases in Rockwall County have slowed down, with an almost equal number of new cases and recoveries within the past week and with more than 800 of the county’s residents vaccinated during the interim.

A final mass vaccination event is being scheduled for Rockwall County later this month.

The virus is still resulting in people being hospitalized, including some in intensive care.

The report from the Rockwall Office of Emergency Management indicated there had been 9,379 cumulative cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, an increase of 39 cases in one week’s time.

The report also noted there had been 9,201 estimated recoveries, representing an increase of 33 individuals within the previous seven days.

There had been 155 deaths reported in Rockwall County due to COVID-19 as of Tuesday, unchanged from the previous week.

According to the county’s report, 14 people were in Rockwall County hospitals due to the virus as of Monday, an increase of two patients in one week’s time. Three of those of those patients were listed in the ICU.

As of Tuesday, 46,231 Rockwall County residents had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, an increase of 830 vaccinations during the previous week.

The Texas Department of State Health Services reported that as of Tuesday, 56.43% of Rockwall County residents aged 16 or older had received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 41.12% being fully vaccinated.

The state agency’s report indicated that 82.22% of those residents in Rockwall County aged 65 and above had received at least the first dose of the vaccine, with 69.50% of the older population having been fully vaccinated as of Tuesday.

The vaccine is now available to anyone age 18 and over. No one under age 16 will be vaccinated.

The Rockwall Office of Emergency Management reported Tuesday that May 14  is the last chance to receive a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium. The office will be providing the Moderna vaccine between from 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
