“The importance of Abilene Gives is that it provides an opportunity for these nonprofits to tell their story to get people excited about what they’re doing,” said Katie Alford, President of Community Foundation of Abilene. “To tell them their needs and to get the donors to really just kind of have fun that day.”
Alford says the COVID-19 pandemic has put a strain on a lot of local nonprofits who depend on the community’s support, and they were surprised at how much they were able to raise last year.
“We actually raised $1.3 million,” said Alford. “And this year those needs are still there, the nonprofits have had to cancel fundraisers they’ve had to close their doors, they’ve had to adjust the way that they provided services or programs. “
Alford says this is an opportunity for the donors to support these local nonprofits when they’re still in need and when they’re still trying to come out of what they’ve experienced over this last year with COVID-19 restrictions.
“It’s just really important for them to be able to be supported to continue to support the programs that they provide for our community,” said Alford. “Whether that’s for people in need or for the arts organizations for animals, whatever it is, you can find an organization that needs help.”
According to Alford anybody can be a part of Abilene Gives, and the minimum to give that day is $10.
“Even if somebody can’t give $10 you can go to the website and see 138 nonprofits who are listed who have needs,” said Alford. “But to also see what they’re doing for our community sometimes it’s just learning about the nonprofits who are here, serving us and serving our people here.”
Alford hopes to see the same donor support as last year, if not more.
“Any amount that we raise is going to be successful for these nonprofits, and they’re going to be very pleased with just support and just anything that they can raise,” said Alford.
