Abilene man killed in head-on crash on Hwy 36

ABILENE, TX— The Abilene Police Department Traffic Division is investigating a crash that claimed the life of a 46-year-old Abilene man.

According to an APD news release, the crash happened at approximately 5:10 a.m. Monday on Highway 36 near Blackburn Road in southeast Abilene.

The release said Mutagaa Smith of Abilene was headed north on Hwy 36 in a white Mazda sedan, when he crossed into the oncoming lane. Witnesses told police Smith missed one vehicle, but collided head-on with a 2018 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Smith had to be extricated by fire crews and was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Next of kin notification has been made. The release said it does not appear Smith was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the pickup truck, Douglas Whitehead, 50, of Hamilton received minor injuries and was not transported for medical attention.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
