ABILENE, TX — A Waxahachie man is in custody after allegedly assaulting two paramedics sent to help him with medical issues, Abilene police said in a statement released Thursday afternoon.
Two gunshots reportedly were fired inside the ambulance transporting Michael Gaylon McMillan, 67, to the hospital after McMillan “got up from the gurney (and) retrieved a handgun from his jacket,” the statement says.
He will be charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant, a second-degree felony, police said in the statement.
A homeowner in the 2400 block of Regent Drive called police at 9 a.m. when McMillan arrived at their door, claiming to be there to do work on their floor, the release says.
Officers arrived and spoke with McMillan, at that point determining he was “suffering a medical issue,” police said.
An ambulance was called to transport him to the hospital.
During the trip, McMillan rose from the gurney and pointed the gun at the paramedics while the vehicle was stopped at the intersection of Ambler Avenue and North Willis Street, the release says.
A struggle ensued, and two shots were fired inside the ambulance, police said, though “fortunately, no one was struck.”
As the struggle continued, McMillan reportedly pulled out a pocket knife and began striking a paramedic with the butt of the knife.
“The driver got out and assisted in restraining McMillan until officers arrived and took him into custody,” the statement says.
