The Abilene Council will vote Thursday on a contract with a no kill animal group to run the city’s animal shelter.

As KTXS first reported two-weeks ago, the city is looking to hire Best Friends to provide direct oversight and an interim director.

The one year deal would be for $112,000, according to the contract.

The shelter hasn’t had a director since Tammi Roberts resigned in March saying she wanted to explore other opportunities.

In November 2018, Mirenda Walden was put on administrative leave and later resigned after the start of a City investigation into her leadership.

Both were making $95,000 a year.

Hanna told KTXS earlier this month that he hopes the year will grow into the year will “provide some strong internal candidates an opportunity to further mature and grow in their profession so that they can be competitive in a new search once the contract with Best Friends is concluded.”
