City of Abilene looking to approve airport master plan

At the Abilene’s City Council’s agenda briefing Monday morning, they discussed the Abilene Regional Airport’s master plan. The Director of Transportation for the City of Abilene, Don Green, said the master plan is meant to enhance travel.

“Our gate area it’s very crowded,” said Green. “We’re trying to add a little bit of space. There are a lot of the changes that we plan on doing within the next two years. From updating restrooms, interior look of the terminal, we’ll take out the gift shop area since it’s not being used. We’ll gain back some space for the public to use.”

Green said they are also working on a quick turnaround facility.

“It’s a facility where all three rental companies will be in the same building,” said Green. “They will just have separate bays, and it’s just where they go in and they clean those returned rental cars and get them ready for the next customer.”

He said money made from car rentals will pay for the building’s new design.

“We’re collecting a customer facility charge of $3 per day for every car rental contract that’s written for those that rent at the airport,” said Green. “So, we’re using that to fund this, to fund the design. We have enough money to do the design now. We think this facility will cost more than the current funding.”

According to Green, long term goals include the possibility of adding more security lines and developing the west side of the airport.

Abilene Regional Airport officials plan to present this master plan at Thursday’s city council meeting.
