ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Taylor County Public Health District reported Thursday one new death linked to COVID-19, the 399th in the county since the pandemic began.
The deceased was a woman in her 80s, health officials said.
The district also reported five new cases of the disease Thursday, all based on antigen testing, as well as four additional recoveries.
Active cases as of Thursday total 147 (based on 53 polymerase chain reaction tests and 94 antigen tests), one more than reported Wednesday.
COVID-19 inpatients at Abilene hospitals total 11, one fewer than reported Wednesday, city officials said. The average age of the inpatients is 62, and four live outside Taylor County.

SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
Abilene ISD: Reported Wednesday four new student cases: two at Abilene High, one at ATEMS and one at Cooper High. Active cases total 12 (nine students, three staff). Since Aug. 17, the district has reported 1,132 cases (572 students, 560 staff).
Wylie ISD: Reported Wednesday two active cases, the same number reported Tuesday. Cases by campus: one at Wylie High and one at East Elementary.
Abilene Christian University: Reported Wednesday two active cases, the same as Tuesday, and five people in quarantine because of possible exposure. The cumulative number of cases is 773.
McMurry University: Reported Wednesday one new staff case. The university has three active cases, and confirmed cases in the spring semester total 51.
