SAN ANGELO, TX— The Blackshear Heights Family hosted its first Easter Eggstravaganza Saturday at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park.

According to Alicia Reyes, a BHF member, the organization decided to have the event for the children in the community.

“To bring something here to Martin Luther King Park, for the kids in this area to have somewhere to come out hunt Easter eggs, gather, fellowship and just have a good time,” Reyes said.

The first egg hunt began at approximately 11 a.m., with two additional egg hunts during the event. The eggs were filled with candy, trinkets and some had special prizes.

The event included games, piñatas, face painting, music and food.

“This is entirely free, this is for our community and our way of giving back, Reyes said. “Making sure the kids have somewhere fun, safe to play and to have families get together, as well.”

Whether families found out about the event through social media or through the organization, the sentiment was the same, have fun and meet new people.

Julie Batjer said she found out about the event through a Facebook flyer. “We have three children, so we are just trying to get them out and meet new people,” she said.

Batjer said her family plans to celebrate Easter with a family brunch.

Lacretia Fobb said her family and the children always go to the park to play. “The family is hosting it, so we just came out and show the kids a good time,” she said.

Fobb said her family will attend church and then have a family event afterward to celebrate Easter.

In addition to the activities, children had the opportunity to meet Spider-Man and the Easter Bunny.  Spider-Man entertained the children until the Easter Bunny arrived.

Blackshear Heights Family hopes to make the event an annual event along with its other events.  The organization is in the planning stages for various events, including a summer kick-off and Juneteenth event.
