AUSTIN, TX – Texas junior tight end Malcolm Epps on Monday announced he will enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal to seek a new opportunity elsewhere.
“First off I would like to thank the Lord for truly blessing me with the tremendous opportunity to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin,” Epps wrote in a brief letter posted on his social media accounts. “These last 3 years of my life have been nothing short of a blessing for me and my family.”
Epps was part of a congested position group that also included fifth-year senior Cade Brewer, junior Jared Wiley, sophomore Brayden Liebrock, freshman Juan Davis and freshman Gunnar Helm. And though Epps had flashes during three seasons at Texas, he was never able to carve out a consistent role in the offense.
Epps, who shuffled between wideout and tight end at Texas, appeared in 24 games with seven starts and amassed 24 receptions for 292 yards and four touchdowns. He had his best campaign as a sophomore, recording 20 catches for 232 yards and two scores. Epps also had a 3-yard reception in last weekend’s Orange-White spring game at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
“In my time on the 40 acres I’ve made life-long friends with bonds that are unbreakable,” Epps wrote. “Here I was able to build a network for myself by establishing firm connections with people in high places. I’ll always remember he impact that the city of Austin has had on me and my family’s lives. I wish Coach Sark and the entire Longhorn football team the best of luck.”
A former All-American at Dekaney, Epps will now try to catch on with a new program. He will be eligible to play immediately wherever he transfers.
