UIL health guidelines forcing high school teams to get creative

Last week, the UIL released their plan for the fall in which they put forth a plan to have sports this fall. They also laid out health guidelines in a lengthy document for teams to implement. “You start reading those pages of protocol that you gotta follow and it’s a little bit intimidating,” said Hamlin Head Football Coach Russell Lucas.

There are a number of changes that will be in place this fall, like athletes not being able to share water bottles. “Fifteen years ago we had PVC pipe on a stand that shot water out and they’d go over and lean over and drink out of that,” said Lucas. “But we are going to improvise on that and we are going to hang it so they can’t touch it and the water will drip down into their mouths.”

Another one of the challenges that arise with these new guidelines is that each school is very different. “That’s what makes it different campus to campus is the access to facilities and those sorts of things,” said Cooper Head Football Coach Aaron Roan. “You know it’s different for every team.”
