ABILENE, TX – The New Orleans Privateers (3-1, 3-0) continued their hot start in conference play with another 4-3 victory, this over the Abilene Christian Wildcats (8-9, 0-1) on Friday afternoon.
Claudette Gilhespie made her debut and was part of a spirited start in singles which was the springboard to victory after falling on the short end of a closely contested doubles point.
PRIVATEERS START FAST IN SINGLES
Lea Alguacil posted a dominant win at flight six to get things going in singles. Alguacil only dropped one game in a straight set decision to put the Privateers on the board.
Gilhespie was next on the board as she made her 2021 spring debut. Gilhespie won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to earn her 34th career dual singles win.
Mar Gendra put the Privateers on the brink with a 7-5, 6-4 win for her second conference victory. That set the stage for Ank Vullings who again decided the match.
Vullings moved her winning streak to 19 straight with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Nini Memishishi. The Wildcats won the last two matches to finish with both going into the third set at flight two and five.
Abilene Christian got the day started by prevailing in tiebreaks at flight one and two in doubles to get the first point.
FROM COACH KANGA
“It was a tough match. We had some tough losses but overall we competed very well. Give credit where it’s due. We lost a tough doubles point but we were methodical and got it done. This team is capable of doing great things and playing against anyone. The chemistry is good and I like the way we compete.”
