ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Independent School District voted to rename three elementary schools after the names of the schools were deemed racist by social justice groups.

According to KTXS, on Jan. 14, the AISD School Board voted 6-1 on three different items renaming campuses named after confederate generals.

The four schools named after the rebels were Robert E. Lee Elementary, Albert Johnston Elementary, John Reagan Elementary, and Stonewall Jackson Elementary.

All four of these men owned human beings. Now the campuses will be named after people who deserve it.

Lee will be renamed after Robert and Sammye Stafford. Staffords were education pioneers to African American families in Abilene.

Johnston will be renamed after Eugene Purcell. Purcell was a Marine but also taught at AISD for many years.

Jackson Elementary School will be named after Dr. Jose Alcorta Sr. Alcorta was a longtime Abilene educator.

Reagan will be shut down.

All three names will go into effect for the 2021-22 school year.
