Old McMurry soccer field turned into community helping farm

The old McMurry University soccer field has been turned into a local farm.

Abilene Fresh, a local non-profit organization, has created their new project Fresh Futures Farm.

Back in 2019, Abilene Fresh executive director Josh Casey got the property from McMurry University.

“It’s really just been sitting here languishing waiting for somebody to do something.” said Casey, “It’s such a weird piece of real estate, so really it’s perfect for growing food.”

Over 50,000 onions and leeks are planted at the old soccer field. Josh is hoping to motivate the next line of farmers.

“I felt compelled to do something that made a difference in my community, suffering from a personal health crisis.” said Casey.

Josh’s family and other volunteers have helped build the property into the farm that it is today. Hoping it could be the staple of Abilene in the future. “We want to farm food, we also want to farm farmers. said Casey, “we want to bring people here, teach them how to grow this food for themselves, their family and their friends.”To find out more about their project or to donate.
